Croatan High School is a public secondary school in Newport, North Carolina. The high school is part of the Carteret County Public School System. It serves the westernmost third of Carteret County, including the towns of Peletier, Cape Carteret, Cedar Point and western half of the island of Bogue Banks, which includes the town of Emerald Isle. Ethnically, Croatan's students are 92% White, 5% African-American, 2% Hispanic, and less than 1% other.[1] Croatan serves roughly 900 students and is considered one of the best academic public schools in the state and no doubt the best high school in Carteret County with test scores near 95%.

In 2009 and 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked Croatan among the top high schools in the United States, awarding the school silver medals.[2] Croatan High School's class of 2010 marked combined SAT scores (based on math and critical reading) of 1076, up from 1064 the previous year, this was 59 points higher than the national average.[3] The school has also been recognized by the state of North Carolina many times as either a School of Distinction, School of Excellence, or Honor School of Excellence.
The football team, coached by David Perry since the school has opened, has been historically unsuccessful with only two winning seasons. The two winning seasons have come in 2010 and 2011, where the team's hopes of competing in the state finals ended both years with a loss to Tarboro High School in the first round.
The basketball program has been slightly more productive than the football team, with recent success with the attribution of a new coach, Dexter Williams. Dexter has brought two winning seasons in a row and is soon to add another. The basketball team has made the playoffs several times.
Wrestling is by far Croatan's strength. The Cougars have gone undefeated in their conference since the school opened in 1998. The last two years have brought four state championships, dual team and individual tournament champions. Since the school has opened, there have been several individual state champions.
Croatan has also been competitive in their conference in recent years. All athletic teams compete in the 2A division level.
